titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to plastic articles reinforced with fibrous materials comprising aromatic polyesters |
abstract | 714,502. Reinforced materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 3, 1952 [June 15, 1951], No. 14200/51. Class 140 Aromatic polyester fibre, yarn or fabric is pretreated with a dyestuff and/or a swelling agent therefor and then used as reinforcement in articles formed from natural rubber, synthetic rubber or synthetic plastic material. The polyesters are obtained by heating glycols of formula HO(CH2)n OH where n is greater than 1 but does not exceed 10 with terephthalic acid or an ester-forming derivative thereof. Preferred glycols are ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol. hexamethylene glycol and decamethylene glycol. Dyestuffs and swelling agents which may be used include acetate dyestuffs such as aminoanthraquinones, aminoazobenzenes and their derivatives; fur dyestuffs such as phenylene diamines and aminophenols; basic dyestuffs such as triphenylmethanes, azine. oxazine and thiazine dyestuffs, azo dyestuffs containing amino groups, leuco sulphuric esters of vat dyestuffs; azoic dyestuffs; phenols (phenol, m-cresol, m-methoxyphenol, #-naphthol catechol) amines (a-naphthylamine, guanidine. aniline. water-soluble aniline salts), carboxylic acids (#-naphthoic acid. salicylic acid, methacrylic acid) amides (dimethylformamide, diethylformaimide dimethylacetamide, p-toluenesulphonamide); melamine; alcohols (benzyl alcohol); ketones (acetophenone, cyclohexanone); notriles (glutaronitrile, adiponitrile, ethylene cyanhydrin, lactonitrile): nitrobenzene, tetrachlorethane, tricresyl phosphate and tetramethylenesulphone. The polyester material may be padded in an aqueous solution or dispersion of the dyestuff and/or swelling agent preferably at 80-100‹C. It may then be treated with adhesives such as polyisocyanates, resorcinol-formaldehyde condensates, melamine- @aldehyde condensates and compounds obtained by reacting acetoacetic esters with polyisocyanates. or polyamines with ketenes 'diketenes, and acetoacetic esters. In an example (all parts by weight) 5 parts of washed and dried polyethylene terephthalate tyre cord are worked in a bath of 0.05 part of 4-nitro-4<1>-amino-azobenzene and 250 parts of water at 85‹C. After washing and drying they are dipped in a 3 per cent. solution of p : p<1>-dicarbimido-diphenylmethane and dried at 100‹C. The cords may then be bonded to a natural rubber mix.. Specifications 477,380, [Group IV], 574,903, 609,943, 609,945, 609,948, [all in Group IV (c)], 610,170. 613.931, [Group IV (c)], and 654,331, [Group IV (b)], are referred to. |
