abstract | 713,758. Blasting explosives. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 25, 1952 [June 18, 1951], No. 14372/51. Class 9(2) Blasting explosives of the kind having a preponderating proportion of crystalline salts which contribute to the power or quench the flame of the explosive, e.g. ammonium and sodium nitrates, distributed in a viscous solution or jelly of nitrocellulose in a solvent comprising a liquid explosive nitric ester, e.g. nitroglycerine or nitrated mixture of glycerine and ethylene glycol, include a tri-ester of ortho-phosphoric acid wherein one esterifying radical is a para-tertiary-octyl-aryl group, e.g. a para-tertiary-octyl-phenyl group or. a nuclearly substituted alkyl, such as methyl, derivative thereof, and the other two esterifying radicals are alkyl groups each containing up to 12 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n- or iso-propyl, n- or iso-butyl, amyl, n- or secondary octyl, nonyl, or lauryl. 0.15- 0.5 per cent of the phosphate ester is suitable. The explosives may also include aromatic nitrocompounds such as ortho-nitrotoluene, or mixtures of nitrotoluenes or dinitrotoluenes which will not crystallize from solution in the nitric ester, e.g. dinitrotoluene oil. Preferably, the phosphate ester is added to the aromatic nitro-compound which is then dissolved in the nitric ester. The nitrocellulose is mixed with the resulting liquid and then the remainder of the ingredients including the crystalline salts are added. Other ingredients referred to are 80/20 nitroglycerine/ethylene glycol dinitrate, oat husk meal, waxed woodmeal, woodmeal, sulphur, starch, and chalk. Specifications 586,224, 596,279, 699,080 and 713,757, [both in Group IV(b)], are referred to. |
