titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the recovery of selenium and selenium compounds
abstract In the manufacture of unsaturated aldehydes e.g. acrolein or methacrolein, by passing olefines, e.g. propylene or isobutene in gaseous phase with molecular oxygen at, say, 230-450 DEG C. over contact materials containing heavy metals or heavy metal compounds, e.g. copper, cupric oxide, copper aluminate, copper silicate, or compounds of vanadium, manganese, chromium, or molybdenum, in the presence of elementary selenium, selenium, selenium oxide, or selenium organic compounds are recovered by bringing the gaseous mixture issuing from the reaction zone in contact with surfaces maintained at above 50 DEG C., e.g. 100-250 DEG C., until practically no more deposition thereon of selenium or selenium compounds takes place. The surfaces, which may be the walls of a vessel through which the issuing gases are passed, or plates or fins placed therein, or beds packed with finely-divided coke or porcelain, may be coated with freshly deposited selenium and/or selenium compounds by passing air charged with selenium therethrough. The selenium may be reused either by placing it in an evaporator to be admixed with the feed gases or the feed gases may be reversed to pass through the vessel in which the selenium is deposited. The issuing gases after removal of the selenium are cooled to room temperature and scrubbed with water to remove the aldehyde. Specifications 625,330, 655,210, 678,557, and 694,362 are referred to.ALSO:In the manufacture of unsaturated aldehydes, e.g. acrolein or methacrolein, by passing olefines, e.g. propylene or isobutene, in gaseous phase with molecular oxygen at say 230-450 DEG C. over contact materials containing heavy metals or heavy metal compounds, e.g. copper, cupric oxide, copper aluminate, copper silicate, or compounds of vanadium, manganese, chromium, or molybdenum, in the presence of elementary selenium, selenium, selenium oxide, or selenium organic compounds are recovered by bringing the gaseous mixture issuing from the reaction zone in contact with surfaces maintained at above 50 DEG C., e.g. 100-250 DEG C. until practically no more deposition thereon of selenium or selenium compounds takes place.
