abstract Solutions suitable for the manufacture of fibres and films comprise an acrylonitrile polymer dissolved in a mixture of nitromethane, water and formic acid and/or oxalic acid. The acrylonitrile polymer may be polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of acrylonitrile with methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, phenyl acrylate or styrene. In the case of oxalic acid, the oxalic acid and water may be present as oxalic acid dihydrate. The fibres and films may be made by dry or wet-spinning or wet-casting techniques such as those described in Specification 712,984, and the fibres oriented by stretching, e.g. as described in Specification 636,476. The compositions may also be used as coatings.
