titleOfInvention Improvements relating to solutions of acrylonitrile polymers
abstract Acrylonitrile polymers are dissolved in or swollen by a mixture comprising a polyhydric phenol and another organic compound of higher molecular weight, other than nitromethane, which by itself is capable of dissolving or swelling polyacrylonitrile. The acrylonitrile polymer may be polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer with methacrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, phenyl acrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and vinylidene chloride. Polyhydric phenols specified are resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, homocatechol, 2-methyl resorcinol, orcinol, 2-methyl hydroquinone, and trihydroxybenzenes. Specified substances which by themselves are capable of swelling or dissolving polyacrylonitrile are oxalic and fumaric acids, maleic, succinic, and glutaric acids and anhydrides, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl and methyl ethyl sulphones, dimethyl sulphoxide, sulpholane, butyrolactone and valerolactones, ethylene carbonate, nitro-ethanol, hydroxy-acetonitrile, alpha hydroxy-propionitrile, ethylene cyanhydrin, ethylene carbonate, meta-and para-nitrophenols, malonitrile, fumaronitrile, succinonitrile, adiponitrile, pinelonitrile, acetylacetone, diketene, and the nitrosamines described in Specifications 712,994 and 713,049. The solvent mixture may also contain a proportion of water, preferably 10 to 30 per cent. by weight. Fibres and films may be made from the polymer solutions by the wet-spinning techniques described in Specifications 711,344 and 712,984. The solutions may also be used for the production of coatings of acrylonitrile polymers. Specifications 636,476 and 712,983 also are referred to. The Provisional Specification states also that the solvent mixtures may be used for dissolving polyvinylidene chloride, and that acetonitrile, formic acid and its ethyl, isopropyl and butyl esters, ethyl acetoacetate, and ethyl malonate may be employed as substances which are capable of dissolving or swelling, polyacrylonitrile.
