titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to preserving rubber
abstract Synthetic rubber such as GR-S is preserved by adding a thio-bis (4, 6-dialkyl phenol) in which each alkyl group contains more than 3 but less than 8 carbon atoms. Preferred compounds are thio-bis (4, 6-ditertiary amyl phenol) and thio-bis (4, 6-disecondary amyl phenol) and they may be added to the solid or a latex. In an example a mix consists of GR-S latex, thio-bis (4, 6-disecondary amyl phenol), ammonium caseinate, caustic soda, saturated fatty acid scrap, oleic acid, water and ethylene glycol. Specification 712,390, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.ALSO:Thio bis-(4,6-dialkyl phenols) in which each alkyl group contains more than 3 but less than 8 carbon atoms, which may be used as rubber preservatives (see Group V) may be made by reacting a 4,6-dialkyl phenol with a sulphur halide. Preferably two molecular equivalents of the phenol are treated with one molecular equivalent of sulphur dichloride. In examples, 2,4-diamyl phenol in which the amyl group was either predominately tertiary or secondary is reacted with either sulphur moon-, or di-, chloride. After removal of volatiles a brown liquid to resinous product is produced. Specification 712,390 is referred to.ALSO:Rubber is preserved by adding a thio bis (4, 6-dialkyl phenol) in which each alkyl group contains more than 3 but less than 8 carbon atoms. Preferred compounds are thio bis (4, 6-di-tertiary amyl phenol and thio bis (4, 6-di-secondary amyl phenol) and they may be added to a latex or to the rubber in solid form. The phenol may be added to the latex, admixed with zinc oxide, sulphur and zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate in a dispersion in alkaline ammonium caseinate. Alternatively the phenol may be added to a foamed latex mix for making sponge stocks containing zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, piperidine cyclopentamethylene dithiocarbamate, sulphur. KOH, and zinc oxide, to which sodium silicofluoride is added. Specification 712,390, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
