titleOfInvention Improvements relating to chlorine-containing materials
abstract The heat-stability of chloralkyl esters of oxygen-containing acids, which tend to lose halogen at 100-250 DEG C., e.g. tri-(b -chlorethyl) phosphate, or of compositions comprising cellulose derivatives and such esters as plasticizers, is improved by incorporating therein a compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen only which contains a single epoxy group and does not boil below 200 DEG C. Epoxy compounds specified are phenoxy propylene oxide, p-octylphenoxy propylene oxide, xylenoxy propylene oxide, cresoxy propylene oxide, glycidyl a -naphthyl ether, glycidyl 2, 3 or 4-methoxyphenyl ether, the benzoate of epihydrin alcohol, the monomethyl monomethoxy derivatives of glycidyl phenyl ether, the glycidyl ether of methyl salicylate, the glycidyl ethers of hydroxy-cyclopentane or hydroxy-cyclohexane, and 1-hydroxy-3.4-epoxy n-butane. The proportion of epoxy compound may be 1-5 per cent. by weight of the plasticizer. The thermoplastic compositions may contain sequestering agents for metallic impurities such as iron, e.g. 2.21-dipyridyl, and a metallic soap such as lead stearate or strontium caprylate. Thermoplastics specified are cellulose acetate, propionate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate, and acetate-stearate. Other non-chlorine-containing plasticizers may be employed as well as the chloralkyl ester, and other chloralkyl esters specified besides tri-(b -chlorethyl) phosphate are the chlorbutyl and chlorbutoxybutyl esters of Specification 651,662, e.g. d -chlorobutylacetate, d -chlorobutoxybutyl acetate, and di-(d -chlorobutyl)phthalate.ALSO:The heat-stability of chloralkyl esters of oxygen-containing acids, which tend to lose halogen at 100-250 DEG C., e.g. tri(b -chlorethyl) phosphate, or of compositions comprising thermoplastics and such esters as plasticizers, is improved by incorporating therein a compound of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen only which contains a single epoxy group and does not boil below 200 DEG C. Those epoxy compounds which are ethers are made by the reaction of epichlorhydrin with the appropriate phenol or alcohol, and those which are esters by the reaction of epichlorhydrin with the alkali metal salts of the appropriate acid. The proportion of epoxy compound may be 1-5 per cent by weight of the plasticizer. The thermoplastic compositions may contain sequestering agents for metallic impurities such as iron, e.g. 2,21-dipyridyl, and a metallic soap such as lead stearate or strontium caprylate.
