titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a method of preparing n-substituted morpholines
abstract N-Substituted morpholines of general formula <FORM:0707924/IV (b)/1> and homologues thereof containing one or more methyl groups replacing hydrogen in the morpholine ring are prepared by heating and reacting one molar proportion of an aliphatic primary amine R-NH2 (R is an acyclic hydrocarbon radical containing from 10-20 carbon atoms) with from 2-5 molar proportions of a b : b 1-dichloro-lower alkyl ether in the presence of an acid acceptor to neutralize the acid formed, and in the presence of water to dissolve the formed salt. Specified amines are decyl, dodecyl, tri-isobutyl, cetyl, oleyl, stearyl, "soya alkyl," "coconut alkyl," lauryl, and particular acid acceptors are alkali metal carbonates and alkali metal hydroxides. In examples: (1) laurylamine, b : b 1-dichlorethyl ether, water and sodium carbonate are heated and shaken for 6 hours, solvents removed, salt separated and remaining N-lauryl morpholine distilled; (2) "soya alkyl" amine, water, dichloroethyl ether and soda ash are reacted as in (1) giving N-"soya" morpholine. "Soya alkyl" and "coconut alkyl" are mixtures of hydrocarbon radicals derived from natural fats and oils. b : b 1-Dichloroisopropyl ether is also specified as a starting material.
