titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to non-fibrous cellulosic material and process of treating same
abstract 706,484. Coated cellulosic films. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Dec. 18, 1950 [May 5, 1950], No. 30758/50. Class 140 The water-repellency of non-fibrous cellulosic films is improved by impregnating at least one surface with a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resin modified by reaction with an aminoalkylsulphuric acid or salt thereof having the general formula NH2(CH2)nOSO3X, wherein n is 1 to 6, and X is a hydrogen, lithium, sodium or potassium atom or an ammonium or tertiary organic-substituted ammonium group, wherein the mol. ratios of urea, formaldehyde and aminoalkyl-sulphuric acid or salt thereof in the resin are within the range 1 : 1.5 : 0.015 to 1 : 3.0 : 0.25 introducing a plasticizing agent, e.g. 8 per cent. glycerol solution, into the film prior to, simultaneously with, or subsequent to resin impregnation, drying the film, partially polymerizing, and applying a water-repellant coating. The preparation of the resins is disclosed in Specification 697,801. Aminomethylsulphuric acid, 2-aminoethylsulphuric acid, 3-aminopropylsulphuric acid, 4-aminobutylsulphuric acid, 5-aminoamylsulphuric acid, and 6-aminohexylsulphuric acid, and salts thereof are specified as modifying agents. The films treated are various regenerated celluloses, and cellulose esters and ethers. Coating compositions listed are those containing cellulose acetate or nitrate, ethyl or methyl cellulose, deacetylated chitin, rubber, chlorinated or cyclocized rubber, rubber hydrochloride, synthetic rubbers, or methacrylate polymers. Waxes, plasticizers, gums and pigments may also be present in the compositions. The impregnating solution may contain 0.01-10 per cent. by weight of resin, aid is neutral or alkaline. Drying and curing are suitably effected at 200‹F.
