titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the oxidation of substituted cyclic compounds |
abstract | Cyclic sulphonic acids having one or more side-chains or a further ring are oxidized in aqueous solution or aqueous nitric acid by means of nitric acid with or without other oxidizing agents, to carboxylic acids. The alkali or alkaline earth salts of the sulphonic acids may be used. Compounds containing as further substituents halogen-, nitro-, phenyl-, phenylalkyl- and carboxylicgroups may be used. Additional oxidizing agents specified include air, oxygen and nitrous gases, and soluble nitrites and nitrates. In examples the oxidation of o- and p-toluene sulphonic acids to the corresponding sulphobenzoic acids, 1:3 1-xylene-4-sulphonic acid to 4-sulphoisophthalic acid and b -naphthalene-sulphonic acid to 4-sulphophthalic acid are described, with the use of aqueous nitric acid and oxygen in one case; the oxidation of toluene sulphonic acids containing chloro-, nitro-, benzyl- and carboxyas substituents to the corresponding sulpho-carboxylic acids is also described. |
