titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to alkylated polystyrene pour depressants
abstract Polystyrene is alkylated in a solution, e.g. in mono- or di-chlorobenzene, containing a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and nitrobenzene or nitromethane as modifier, by adding an olefine, e.g. octadecene-1, hexadecene-1 and cracked wax olefines under such conditions that the ratio <FORM:0704813/IV (a)/1> is between 7.5 and 15 where C is the weight ratio of catalyst to polystyrene, T is the temperature in DEG F., and R is the mol. ratio of nitrobenzene to catalyst. The catalyst may be aluminium chloride or bromide, or chlorobromides, hydroxybromides and mixed aluminium halides. The alkylating agent may be added dropwise, and the product purified by precipitation with methanol, reprecipitated from hexane solution by methanol or isopropanol, or alternatively dissolved in oil, alkali washed and steam distilled. The products are suitable as pour depressant additives to mineral lubricating oil. Specification 640,566 is referred to.
