titleOfInvention | Method of polymerizing vinyl aromatic compounds with rubber |
abstract | Thermoplastic interpolymers are made, e.g. continuously, by forming a solution of from 85 to 99 parts by weight of a monomeric mixture containing at least 75 per cent. of a monovinyl aromatic compound and from 1 to 15 parts of a natural or synthetic rubber, heating the solution at a temperature between 60 and 150 DEG C. until from 10 to 40 per cent. has been interpolymerized while at the same time agitating the mass with a shearing action so that linear interpolymers are obtained and continuing the heating at a temperature between 90 and 200 DEG C. until the polymerization of the monomeric material is complete. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, or di-t-butyl peroxide or a polymerization modifier such as lauryl mercaptan, di-isopropyl xanthate or methallyl phosphate. The polymerizable mixture may include lubricants such as butyl stearate or soyabean oil. The synthetic rubber is selected from polyisoprene, polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene copolymers, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, and butadiene-methyl isopropenyl ketone copolymers. Specified monomers are styrene, o-methylstyrene, m-methylstyrene, p-methylstyrene, m-ethylstyrene, p-ethylstyrene, p-isopropylstyrene, o-chlorostyrene, p-chlorostyrene, o, p-dimethyl styrene, o- and p-diethylstyrenes, alpha-methyl styrene, methyl-alpha-methyl styrene, dimethyl-alpha-methyl styrene, ethyl-alpha-methyl styrene, isopropyl-alpha-methyl styrene, chloro-alpha-methyl styrene, dichloro-alpha-methyl styrene, chloro-methyl-alpha-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl isopropenyl ketone. The product may be ground to a granular form and moulded. |
