titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to polymeric products derived from polyisocyanate-modified polyesters
abstract A substantially linear polyester having an hydroxyl number from 20-80, preferably 40-60, is modified by reaction with a poly-isocyante in a quantity 100 - 600 per cent. in excess of that equivalent to the hydroxyl groups in the polyester, the resulting product then being reacted with a diamine in a proportion equivalent to from at least one quarter to at most all the remaining isocyanate groups. In general the product is a polyurea intimately associated with a polyester which acts as a plasticizer, the polyurea being cross-linked by reaction with isocyanate. The initial polyesters are primarily derived from glycols and aliphatic saturated dicarboxylic or hydroxy-acids but small quantities of materials of higher functionality, e.g. trihydric alcohols, and of unsaturated or aromatic acids may be included. The acid number of the polyesters should be low to avoid carbon dioxide formation. With low isocyanate content the final products are elastic, higher isocyanate content giving harder, non-brittle products. By choosing slowly reacting isocyanates and diamines the reaction mixture may be moulded in the liquid phase. Six examples are given, examples 1-5 describing the modification of glycol - adipic acid and propylene glycol adipic acid esters having hydroxyl numbers about 50 with toluylene and 1.5 naphthalene diisocyanates, the products being reacted with dichlorobenzidine, toluylene diamine and 4.21 diamino - diphenyl, the final products being used to cover automobile steering wheels, condensers and cable joints and for packings, foils and plates. Talcum is used as a filler in example 1. In example 6 a polyester from adipic acid, glycol and trimethylolpropane, having an hydroxyl number 60, is modified with toluylene diisocyanate and the product reacted with dichlorobenzidine. Other fillers referred to are titanium dioxide, asbestos and mixtures of asbestos with iron powder. Specifications 700,609 and 700,610 are referred to.
