titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to the stabilisation of aldehydes and petrols |
abstract | N : N1 - Dialkyl - m - phenylene diamines are incorporated as anti-oxidants in a composition of matter comprising an organic compound liable to deterioration arising from peroxide formation which is selected from aldehydes of structure R.CHO (where R is a hydrocarbon radicle) and petrols. The anti-oxidant is present in small amount (normally 00.1-1 per cent), and particular diamines specified are N : N1 - di - isopropyl - and N : N1 - di - sec. - butyl-m-phenylene diamine. In examples: (1) N : N1 - di - isopropyl - m - phenylene diamine is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of (a) m-nitraniline in acetone, (b) m-dinitrobenzene in acetone, (c) m-phenylene-diamine in acetone; (2) N : N1 - di - sec. - butyl - m - phenylene diamine is prepared by similar hydrogenation of m-nitraniline in methyl ethyl ketone; (3) anti-oxidant properties of these substances were determined for (a) nonaldehyde by estimation of acid produced, (b) cracked petrols.ALSO:Petrols liable to deterioration arising from peroxide formation, are treated with a small amount of at least one N:N1-dialkyl-m-phenylene diamine, which inhibits such deterioration. In an example, a thermally cracked petrol is stabilized by the addition of 0.03 per cent of (a) N:N1-di-isopropyl-m-phenylene diamine; (b) N:N1-disec-butyl-m-phenylene diamine. |
