titleOfInvention | Softening agent for rubber and a rubber composition containing the same |
abstract | Softening agents for use in the working up of rubber comprise by weight 1-25 per cent of an aromatic carboxylic acid, 25 per cent of an aromatic petroleum derivative, and 0-50 per cent of a neutral petroleum oil. The rubber includes homopolymerization products of butadiene, its homologues and derivatives, e.g. methyl butadiene, dimethyl butadiene, pentadiene, chloroprene, and copolymers of butadiene, its homologues and derivatives with other unsaturated organic compounds such as acetylenes, e.g. vinyl acetylene, olefines, e.g. isobutylene, and vinyl compounds, e.g. vinyl chloride, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, styrene, acrolein, methyl isopropenyl ketone, vinyl ethyl ether. The aromatic acid is exemplified by benzoic, m- and p-toluic, p-tert.-butyl benzoic, phthalic, salicylic, the chlorobenzoic, nitrobenzoic, chlorotoluic and chlorosalicylic acids. The aromatic derivative is exemplified by the asphaltic residue of crude oil distillation and the product obtained by extracting petroleum distillate with phenol and distilling off the phenol. Specification 551,459, [Group V], is referred to.ALSO:Softening agents for use in the working up of rubber comprise by weight 1-25 per cent. of an aromatic carboxylic acid, 25 per cent. of an aromatic petroleum derivative, and 0-50 per cent. of a neutral petroleum oil. The rubber includes forms of raw and reclaimed rubber, and synthetic rubbers. The aromatic acid is exemplified by benzoic, m- and ptoluic, p-tert. butyl benzoic, phthalic and salicylic acids. The aromatic derivative is exemplified by the asphaltic residue of crude oil distillation and the product obtained by extracting petroleum distillate with phenol and propane and distilling off the phenol. According to a table, a tyre tread mix of smoked sheet, carbon black, mercaptobenzothiazole, phenyl betanaphthylamine, zinc oxide, stearic acid and sulphur is rendered more tacky by the softening agents than by the aromatic acid alone or the aromatic derivative alone. Additional softening agents, e.g. pine tar, cumar resins, soft factice, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, triacetin, tetralin, stearic acid, lauric acid may be incorporated in the rubber. Specification 551,459 is referred to. |
