abstract | 696,188. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 16, 1952 [Jan. 24, 1951], No. 1276/52. Class 39(i) A luminiscent material consists of arsenic activated zinc sulphide, prepared by mixing, as by grinding, with zinc sulphide from 0.01 per cent to 6 per cent by weight of arsenic in the form of a compound such as arsenic trisulphide, arsenic trioxide or zinc arsenate, from about 2 per cent to about 6 per cent by weight of a flux such as sodium chloride or other alkali or alkali earth halides, firing in hydrogen at temperatures from 800‹C to 1200‹C, preferably at 900‹C for about half half an hour, cooling, grinding, refiring at 900‹C for about 15 minutes, cooling and washing to free of flux. The phosphor is suitable for use after one firing operation, but by cooling, regrinding and refiring, a more homogeneous product is obtained. The colour of the ligfit emitted by the phosphor under cathode ray or 3650A‹ ultra-violet excitation may be varied by varying the amount of arsenic added, the time of firing and the temperature of firing, either singly or in combination. With from 0.01 per cent to 2.0 per cent of arsenic, white light is emitted, a slight green tinge being present with the higher content. With 5 per cent of arsenic green light is emitted. Substantially higher temperatures than 900‹C or substantially longer firing times than half an hour tend to shift the colour towards the orange, due to loss of arsenic by vaporization. |
