abstract | Plasticizable, vulcanizable polymers having the empirical formula C2H2+xClx, where x is greater than 0.97 but not greater than 0.99 are made by treating acetone insoluble polyvinyl chloride suspended in a partial ether of a glycol with a strong base so as to remove at least 1 per cent but less than 3 per cent of combined hydrochloric acid. Ethers mentioned are the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol and the monoethyl ether of diethylene glycol. The strong base may be caustic potash or benzyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide. The polymers may be compounded with antioxidants such as hydroquinone, naphthoquinone, anthraquinone, para-t-butyl phenol, 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoic acid, phenyl betanaphthylamine, diphenylamine or secondary aromatic amines; plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, diamyl phthalate, dihexyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl-glycol phthalate, methyl or ethyl phthallyl ethyl glycollate, butyl phthallyl butyl glycollate, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polychloroprene, or polymers of glycols with dicarboxylic acids; stabilizers such as lead soaps or alcohols containing at least 12 carbon atoms in conjunction with alkali metal carbonates; vulcanizing agents such as sulphur, mercapto-benzthiazole, diphenyl guanidine, phenyl beta-naphthylamine, zinc oxide, magnesia, litharge, m-nitrobenzene, chloranil, quinone dioxime or quinone dichlordi-imide in the presence of lead peroxide, benzene disulphonyl chloride with ferric choride; thermosetting condensation products of aldehydes and phenols; stearic acid or sulphur chloride, and reinforcing fillers such as carbon black or natural rubber mixes. The polymers and compositions may be made into gaskets, sealing rings, liners, flexible piping, and used for coating textile fabrics. |
