titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to pigments and pigment compositions
abstract Coating compositions comprise a film-forming agent together with the manganese salt of a dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0693598/IV (a)/1> (X=chlorine, bromine, iodine or nitro) as pigment. The film-forming agent may be an alkyd, phenol-formaldehyde or other synthetic resin or a cellulose derivative such as the nitrate. Metallic powders such as aluminium may be added. In examples, the following compositions are described: (1) pigment, drying oil modified alkyd resin, petroleum spirit, lead and cobalt naphthenates; (2) as (1) containing also aluminium pasted with hydrocarbons; (3) pigment, cellulose nitrate, alkyd resin, dibutyl phthalate, blown castor oil, ethyl and butyl alcohols and acetates, and toluene, with or without aluminium paste; (4) cellulose nitrate, polybutyl methacrylate, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, pigment, aluminium flake and usual esters, ketones, alcohols and hydrocarbons used in lacquers. Alternative plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, dibenzyl adipate, dibenzyl sebacate and benzyl butyl phthalate. Other lamellar or powdered pigments may be used, e.g. copper bronze, stainless steel, nickel, mica, graphite or Pearl Essence. Polybutyl methacrylate may be replaced by its copolymer with acrylonitrile or by other methacrylates, e.g. polymethyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl or cyclohexyl. In the case of polymethyl methacrylate the cellulose nitrate may be omitted. When an alkyd resin is used it may be modified with a melamine or urea, formaldehyde condensate. Specification 499,790 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises the manganese salts of dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:0693598/IV (c)/1> where X is halogen or a nitro group. These are made by coupling the appropriate diazotized anthranilic acid with 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid under alkaline conditions, isolating the alkali salt of the dyestuff and reacting it with a soluble manganese salt. Examples show the process where X is chlorine or nitro; X may also be bromine or iodine. The manganese salts are used as pigments for lacquers (see Group IV (a)).
