titleOfInvention | A process for the preparation of titanium and zirconium tetrahalides |
abstract | Titanium or zirconium tetrahalides are produced by heating a mixture of titanium or zirconium phosphate and one or more alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) halides to a temperature at least as high as the melting point of the alkaline earth metal halide(s), say to 800-900 DEG C; the volatilized tetrahalides are condensed. The reactants are first dried separately, or in admixture by heating to a temperature, say 600 DEG C, below that at which reaction occurs. 50-100 per cent excess of alkaline earth metal halide may be used. The alkaline earth metal phosphate produced may be treated with sulphuric acid to form phosphoric acid for reuse as below. Examples described the production of titanium phosphates by reaction of precipated titanium hydrate or of rutile with 85 per cent phosphoric acid, the masses being dried at 200 DEG C and calcined at 900 DEG C. and of zirconium phosphate by neutralizing zirconium sulphate solution with ammonium hydroxide, heating to 60 DEG C the zirconium hydrate produced mixing with 85 per cent phosphoric acid, drying the mass at 200 DEG C and calcining at 1000 DEG C. |
