titleOfInvention Solutions of substituted ammonium salts
abstract A solution useful for introducing fluorine into organic compounds comprises a solution of a hydrofluoride of an organic nitrogen-containing base or the fluoride of an organic quaternary ammonium radicle, in an inert solvent not completely miscible with water which is a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon containing at least one hydrogen atom. Solutions of substituted ammonium salts are made by reacting ammonium or potassium fluoride in the presence of water with a solution in the inert solvent, of a substituted ammonium salt derived from an organic nitrogen-containing base or organic quaternary ammonium radicle and from an acid, which acid forms with the ammonium or potassium ion a salt which is less soluble in the reaction mixture than is the fluoride used. Alternatively the dry fluoride is added to the substituted ammonium salt dissolved in the inert solvent before or after the addition of sufficient water to the organic phase to allow the reaction to proceed sufficiently towards the production of the organic fluorine compound. Preferably the substituted ammonium salt has a cation containing at least six carbon atoms and preferably the base is of strength not less than that of pyridine. The reaction mixture may be used for fluorination with or without prior isolation although separation is required where an aqueous phase would lead to an undesired hydrolysis. In examples, aqueous potassium fluoride is added to methyl dibutylamine hydrochloride in (1) chloroform, (4) trichloroethylene, (5) methylene dichloride, and (6) tetrachloroethane, and to (2) diethyl cyclohexyl- and (3) triethyl-amine hydrochlorides, and (7) tetraethyl ammonium chloride in chloroform and the resultant products used to fluorinate bis-dimethylaminochloro-phosphineoxide to the corresponding fluoro-compound. Specification 688,760 is referred to.
