titleOfInvention | Manufacture of 2:4:4-trimethylpentanal |
abstract | 2,4,4-Trimethyl-pentanol is obtained by isomerizing 1,2 - epoxy - 2,4,4 - trimethylpentane by treating it with acidic substances other than acids. Suitable acidic substances are the chlorides of trivalent iron, zinc, tin, aluminium and titanium; boron trifluoride; acid activated siliceous earths such as Fuller's earth, bentonite and montmorillonite; hydrogen ion exchange materials such as acid reacting zeolites; sulphonated formaldehyde-phenol resins and sulphonated coal. The epoxide may be used in its concentrated form or, preferably, dissolved in inert solvents, e.g. paraffins, olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons, chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. The reaction is preferably carried out in the absence of water and in an inert atmosphere, e.g. under nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The process is most conveniently carried out under atmospheric temperature but temperatures between 50 DEG and 80 DEG C. may be necessary to finish the reaction and it may be carried out batchwise or continuously. In the examples 1,2-epoxy-2,4,4-trimethyl pentane is isomerized to 2,4,4-trimethyl pentanol by the action of (a) anhydrous ferric chloride; (b) anhydrous zinc chloride; (c) stannic chloride; (d) boron trifluoride-ether complex; (e) titanium tetrachloride; (f) acid-washed Fuller's earth; (g) stannic chloride; and (h) aluminium chloride. Specification 689,095 is referred to. |
