titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the production of liquid polybutadiene polymers |
abstract | Liquid 1,3-butadiene polymers, e.g. of average molecular weight 1000-3000, are made, continuously or batchwise, by adding a portion of the monomeric charge to an agitated suspension maintained at a temperature of 60-110 DEG C., which consists of a liquid hydrocarbon which is a solvent for the polymer, and a finely-divided alkali metal catalyst, e.g. of particle size less than 200 microns, in an amount not exceeding 2.0 parts by weight per 100 parts of monomeric charge, and when polymerization is initiated adding, gradually, if desired, the remainder of the charge, and subsequently when polymerization is complete, deactivating the catalyst, e.g. by treating the suspension with carbon dioxide, and recovering the polymer. The 1, 3-butadiene is preferably purified before use. The polymer may be polybutadiene or a copolymer of butadiene with isoprene, piperylene, 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene, styrene, or methyl-substituted styrene. Specific alkali metals are sodium and potassium and, if desired, the alkali metal suspension may contain a dispersion stabilizer such as dodecyl mercaptan or carbon black. Solvents mentioned are pentane, hexane, heptane, naphtha fractions, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene and alkylbenzenes. |
