titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to organic phosphorus-containing compounds
abstract A process for the manufacture of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0688760/IV (b)/1> wherein Y is a mono-alkylamino, di-alkylamino, or mono-cycloalkylamino, and X may be alkyloxy or one of the radicals represented by Y, the alkyl groups in each case containing not more than eight carbon atoms, comprises reacting together in solution in an organic solvent a compound of the general formula <FORM:0688760/IV (b)/2> with a hydrofluoride of a tertiary amine having a base strength at least as great as that of pyridine. When X and Y are each dialkylamino radicals, a dialkylamine may be reacted with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of the tertiary amine to form a mixture of the bisdialkylamino-chloro-phosphine oxide and the hydrochloride of the tertiary base. Ammonium or potassium fluoride in strong aqueous solution is added, which reacts with the amine hydrochloride to form the amine hydrofluoride which with the bis-dialkylamino chloro-phosphine oxide reacts to give the bis-dialkylamino fluoro-phosphine oxide. Alternatively, the tertiary amine hydrofluoride may be prepared separately by the process of Specification 692,774, followed by the addition of the bisdialkylamino-chloro-phosphine oxide. As a further alternative, a solution in an organic solvent of a hydrochloride of the tertiary base, and the compound <FORM:0688760/IV (b)/3> are reacted with a strong aqueous solution of potassium or ammonium fluoride. The "strong aqueous solutions" of the fluorides contain at least 15 g. of anhydrous potassium fluoride or 10 g. of anhydrous ammonium fluoride per 100 g. of solution. Chloroform is a suitable solvent, and methyldibutylamine and diethylcyclohexylamine are suitable tertiary amines. Examples describe the preparation by the above methods of (1) and (2), bis-dimethylamino - fluoro - phosphine oxide; (3) dimethylamino - N - ethyl - N - cyclohexylaminofluoro-phosphine oxide; (4) ethyl dimethylamino - fluoro phosphonite (X represents C2H5O-, Y represents (CH3)2N-). Specification 688,787 also is referred to.
