titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the copolymerization of diolefins and aromatic hydrocarbons |
abstract | Copolymers are prepared by reacting a diolefin with an aromatic hydrocarbon which has no unsaturation in a side chain at a temperature below 0 DEG C. in the presence of a dissolved Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as aluminium chloride, aluminium bromide, titanium tetrachloride, boron trifluoride or uranium chloride. The diolefin may be butadiene, di-methyl butadiene, methyl pentadiene, cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene or myrcene and the aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene, toluene, a xylene, cymene, ethyl, di-ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, tetra-methyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl, amyl, tert.-amyl or hexa-methyl benzene, mesitylene, durene, isodurene, phenanthrene, anthracene, acenaphthene, tetralin or hydrindene. The catalyst may be dissolved in methyl, ethyl or methylene chloride or ethylidene fluoride. The diolefin and/or the catalyst may be added incrementally during the reaction. The reaction may be carried out in two stages in the first of which a non-alkylated or lesser-alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon is reacted with an olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to produce an alkylated aromatic compound which is then reacted in a second stage with the diolefin with additional catalyst to effect the copolymerization. The copolymers may be reacted with linseed oil to produce surface coating materials.ALSO:Copolymers prepared by reacting a diolefin with an aromatic hydrocarbon which has no unsaturation in a side chain (see Group IV (a)), may be heated with linseed oil to produce surface coating materials. |
