abstract | A non-clogging fuel oil comprises a cracked hydrocarbon fuel oil containing not more than 0.025 per cent by weight of a salt of an organic alicyclic acid and not more than 0.02 per cent by weight of a detergent. The additives may be prepared as fuel-oil concentrates. Salts of organic alicyclic acids mentioned are the sodium, potassium, caesium, calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, lead, tin, germanium, zirconium, chromium, cadmium, cobalt, iron, molybdenum, nickel and bismuth salts of the following acids: Naphthenic, phenyl naphthenic, hydroxy-phenyl naphthenic, benzyl naphthenic, benzoyl naphthenic, naphthyl naphthenic, xenyl naphthenic, phenylvinaconic, phenyl - caronic, truxillic, phenyl-norpinic, phenylpinic, phenyl-camphoric, phenyl camphenic, phenyl 2, 3, 4-trimethyl cyclopentane-3 carboxylic, phenyl hexahydrobenzoic, hydrophenyl hexahydrobenzoic, benzyl hexahydrobenzoic, phenyl hexahydrophthalic, phenyl quinic, hexahydrobenzoic, tetrahydrophthalic, hexahydrophthalic, alkyl hexahydrophthalic, alkylene cyclohexadiene carboxylic, cyclohexyl acetic, cyclohexylbutyric, cyclohexylcaproic, cyclohexylpropionic, cyclohexylvaleric, fencholic, cholic and abietic acids. Detergents specified are alkali, alkaline earth, heavy metal and organic nitrogen base salts of organic acids, such as petroleum sulphonates, phenates, alcoholates, salicylates, carbamates, thiocarbamates and xanthates. Particular detergents mentioned are barium tertiary octyl phenol sulphide and disulphide, barium ditertiary amyl phenol sulphide, calcium isohexadecyl phenol sulphide, magnesium tertiary amyl phenol sulphide, cobalt tertiary amyl phenol sulphide, barum dodecyl salicylate sulphide, calcium octyl phenol selenide, and the sulphide of the barium salt of the amyl ester of p-hydroxy dithiobenzoic acid. Solutizers for water, such as glycerine, glycol-ethers, glycols and ether alcohols, many examples of which are given, may also be added; other optional additives are small amounts of caustic alkalis or aniline as corrosion inhibitors; foam inhibitors such as dimethyl silicone; fluoro-organic compounds such as fluoro paraffins; and organic esters such as methyl stearate, dioctyl sebacate, dioctyl phthalate and glyceryl mono- or di-oleate or stearate. Mixtures of thermally or catalytically cracked and straight-run fuel oils may be used. Specified oils are cracked gas oils, fuel oils, furnace oils, burner oils, diesel fuel oils and kerosene.
