abstract Chlorosiloxanes of general formula Cl3Si (OSiCl2)xCl where x is at least 1, and prepared by reacting SiCl4 with MnO2, CuO, Cu2O, CaO, ZnO, MgO, Fe2O3, Ag2O, or HgO in the presence of a liquid saturated aliphatic nitrile, liquid aromatic nitrile, liquid saturated aliphatic nitro compound, or liquid aromatic nitro compound solvent (see Group III), may be used as intermediates in the preparation of organosiloxanes and as one of the copolymers in siloxane resins.ALSO:Chlorosiloxanes of general formula Cl3Si (OSiCl2) x Cl where x is at least 1 are made by reacting SiCl4 with MnO2, CuO, Cu2O, CaO, ZnO, MgO, Fe2O3, Ag2O, or HgO, there being at least one mol. SiCl4 per mol. of oxide, in the presence of a liquid saturated aliphatic nitrile, liquid aromatic nitrile, liquid saturated aliphatic nitro-compound, or liquid aromatic nitro-compound solvent, the solvent being present in an amount of at least 1 per cent by weight based on the SiCl4. An additional product is a dry powder metal complex of general formula Clx MOSiCl3 where M is Mn, Cu, Ca, Zn, Mg, Ag, or Hg, and x is O, 1 or 2. About 0.1 grm. per g-mol SiCl4 of CuCl2 or HgCl2 may be added as catalyst to the reaction. Suitable solvents are acetonitrile, propionitrile, butyronitrile, valeronitrile, benzonitrile, cyclohexonitrile, capronitrile, nitromethane, nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, and nitrocycloethane, nitropropane, nitrooctane nitrohexane.
