titleOfInvention Process for preparing methine dyes
abstract A dye of the general formula <FORM:0684386/IV (c)/1> wherein R, R1 and R2 are lower alkyl groups, is prepared by heating together substantially equimolar amounts of a compound of the formula <FORM:0684386/IV (c)/2> and a compound of the formula CN-CH2COOR with an amount of an alkaline catalyst sufficient to cause the condensation to go to completion, in the absence of a solvent, at a temperature sufficient to maintain the starting materials and reaction product in a liquid condition until the condensation is completed. In example 1, a dye is prepared by adding piperidine to warm p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde and then ethyl cyanoacetate dropwise, and stirring with heating. The dye may be milled with "Flotite" Dry, Aquarol SO, and water to give a product for dyeing. In example 2, the procedure is similar, using methyl cyanoacetate. The aldehyde may also be p-dipropylamino-, p-dibutylamino-, p-methylethylamino-, or p-methylbutylamino-benzaldehyde, and the cyanoacetate may also be propyl or butyl cyanoacetate.
