abstract Copolymers of vinylidene cyanide and an aliphatic conjugated diolefin having the structure <FORM:0683655/IV (a)/1> where M1 is a vinylidene cyanide unit, M2 is a unit of diolefin and X is a polydigit number are made by polymerizing in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst, a mixture of the monomers in an organic liquid solvent which is more than 70 per cent of the total solution. If desired, monomer and/or catalyst and/or solvent may be added continuously or intermittently during the process. Specified diolefins are butadiene-1,3, 2-methyl butadiene-1,3, piperylene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene-1,3, 1-ethyl butadiene-1,3, and 2-methyl pentadiene-1,3. Solvents mentioned are benzene, toluene, xylenes, propylbenzene, butyl benzene, amylbenzene dichloroethane, trichloroethane and chlorobutane. The catalyst may be silver peroxide, benzoyl, caprylyl, lauryl, acetone, acetyl benzoyl, o-o1-dibromobenzoyl, o-o1-dichlorobenzoyl, or pelargonyl peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide or cumene hydroperoxide. The copolymers may be used in the melt spinning of filaments which may be cold drawn, in the manufacture of moulded articles and for the casting of films.
