titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to fireproofing compositions and methods of making the same |
abstract | A material containing 32-43 per cent phosphorus, 25-33 per cent nitrogen, whereof less than 25 per cent is present as ammonia nitrogen, the remainder being hydrogen and oxygen, and produced by reacting ammonia with phosphoryl chloride in a hydrocarbon solvent (see Group III) may be used to render combustible materials non-combustible, e.g. as a constituent of phenolic and vinyl resins such as polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl acetatechloride copolymers. Combinations of the material with alkyd resins, and with urea- or melamine-formaldehyde condensation products intumesce, when subjected to heat, with the formation of a bulky, porous char. Such combinations may be used in the production of fire-retarding paints, varnishes and lacquers. Examples relate to (i) the treatment of cotton cloth with a mixture of the material, antimony oxide, polyvinyl chloride-acetate, triphenyl phosphate and methyl ethyl ketone, (ii) a coating for metal panels comprising a mixture of the material and resorcinol-formaldehyde condensation product, (iii) a mixture, for application to wooden panels, of the material and a phthalic acid-glycerol resin in acetone, (iv) a water dispersible paint, for application to wooden panels, of the material, urea-formaldehyde condensation product, mannitol, titanium dioxide and water, (v) a fire-retarding paint comprising the material, oil-soluble melamineformaldehyde resin, xylene, p-toluene sulphonic acid, and titanium dioxide. Specification 683,560 is referred to.ALSO:A material containing 32-43 per cent phosphorus, 25-33 per cent nitrogen, whereof less than 25 per cent is present as ammonia nitrogen, the remainder being hydrogen and oxygen, is produced by reacting ammonia with phosphoryl chloride dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling point above 100 DEG C, at a temperature of 0-100 DEG C, heating the reaction product of the first step, preferably still suspending in the hydrocarbon, to above 155 DEG C but below 250 DEG C, at atmospheric or higher pressure, leaching the product, separated from the hydrocarbon, with water to remove ammonium chloride, and drying. Suitable solvents are kerosene, gas oil, mineral oil, lubricating oil. The ammonia may be used to the extent of 5 mols. per mol. phosphorus oxychloride. The product may be applied to combustible materials to render them non-combustible and may be used as a constituent of paints, including water paints, lacquers and varnishes. |
