titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the preparation of polymerized unsaturated organic materials |
abstract | In aqueous emulsion polymerization, at a temperature below 5 DEG C. the aqueous medium comprises a 10 to 30 per cent solution of an electrolyte, an emulsifying agent, a polymerization catalyst, e.g. a redox system, and optionally a modifier, e.g. butyl mercaptan or mixtures of mercaptans. Specified monomers are 1,3-butadiene, 2,3 - dimethyl - 1,3 - butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 3 - furyl - 1,3 - butadiene, 3 - methoxy-1,3-butadiene, chloroprene, bromoprene, methyl chloroprene, styrene, p-chlorostyrene, p-methoxy styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrulate, methyl alphachlor-acrylate, methyl, ethyl and butyl methacrylates, methyl ethacrylate, acrylonitrilemethacrylonitrile, methacrylamide, methyl isopropenyl ketone, methyl vinyl ketone, methyl vinyl ether, vinylethinyl alkyl carbinols, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl furane, vinyl carbazole, vinyl acetylene and mixtures. The emulsifying agent may be alkylated aryl polyether alcohols, sorbitan monolaurate, monopalmitate or mono-oleate, lecithin, or salts of organic acids containing 6 to 10 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. the sodium and potassium salts of the acids capric, caprylic or caproic, or sodium hexyl sulphate. The catalyst may be cumene and diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxides alone or admixed with ferrous sulphate and sodium pyrophosphate, 2 - (4 - methoxybenzenediazo - mercapto) - naphthalene admixed with potassium ferrocyanide, and t.-butyl perbenzoate or t.-butyl permaleic acid, or t.-butyl hydroperoxide, or di-t.-butyl diperphthalate, or dibenzal diperoxide, or hydroxyheptyl peroxide, or methyl-cyclohexane hydroperoxide, or t. - butylisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide or dodecylisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide or triisopropylbenzene hydroxide admixed with ferrous sulphate and sodium pyrophosphate. The electrolyte may be a chloride, nitrate or sulphate of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium or a salt, e.g. potassium, of an organic acid having less than six carbon atoms in the molecule such as formic, acetic, propionic or butyric acid. |
