titleOfInvention Manufacture of water-insoluble monoazo dyestuffs
abstract Monoazo dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:0679275/IV (a)/1> where X is alkyl, alkoxy or halogen and R is aryl (substituted or not) are used for colouring plastic masses from high molecular organic compounds, e.g. condensation products from formaldehyde and urea, phenol or amines, or vinyl compounds; also, they may be added to the spinning solutions of acetate and viscose artificial silk. In the examples: (1) a composition is made of polyvinyl chloride, dibutyl phthalate, titanium dioxide or other filler and the dyestuff of the above formula where X is methoxy and R is 2 : 4-dimethoxy-5-chlorophenyl or p-xenyl; (2) a mixture of a ureaformaldehyde condensate, wood flour and the dyestuff (X=methoxy, R=phenyl) is ground together and moulded under pressure. Other suitable dyestuffs are listed.ALSO:Monoazo dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:0679275/IV (b)/1> where X is alkyl, alkoxy or halogen and R is aryl (substituted or not) are used for colouring plastic masses from high molecular organic compounds, e.g. condensation products from formaldehyde and casein. In an example the dyestuff (X=methoxy, R=p-methoxyphenyl) is prepared in the presence of zinc white and aluminium hydroxide to produce a colour lake; this is mixed with rennet casein and zinc white and hardened with formaldehyde, giving a red horn-like mass. Other suitable dyestuffs are listed.ALSO:The invention comprises water-insoluble monoazo dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:0679275/IV (c)/1> where X is alkyl, alkoxy or halogen and R is aryl (substituted or not). These are made by coupling the appropriate diazotized 4-substituted-3-aminobenzoic p-xenylamide with the oxy-naphthoic arylide, the components being so chosen that they contain no water-solubilizing groups such as carboxylic or sulphonic acid. Examples show: (1) 4-methoxy-3-aminobenzoic p-xenylamide --> oxynaphthoic 2 : 4-dimethoxy - 5 - chloranilide; (2) 4 - methyl - 3 - aminobenzoic p-xenylamide --> oxynaphthoic p-toluidide; (3) 4-methoxy-3-aminobenzoic p-xenylamide --> oxynaphthoic p-anisidide; (4) 4-methoxy-3-aminobenzoic p-xenylamide --> oxynaphthoic p-xenylamide; and (5) 4-methoxy-3-aminobenzoic p-xenylamide --> oxynaphthoic anilide. A list of further components is given. Another example shows the preparation of a colour lake by reacting diazotized 4-methoxy-3-aminobenzoic diphenylamide with oxynaphthoic p-toluidide in the presence of zinc white and freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide. Specification 210,081, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
