titleOfInvention | Improvements in the production of unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbons |
abstract | Unsaturated halides are made by reacting acetylenic hydrocarbons with hydrogen halide in an aqueous solution in which cuprous halide forms 90 per cent or more of the halide salts present and in which the molecular ratio of cuprous halide to hydrogen halide is about 1 : 2. The cuprous halide is thus present as H2CuCl3, which is formed by mixing the constituents in the correct proportion; when using the constant boiling aqueous acid the cuprous halide solution has a S.G. of 1.4 at 70 DEG C. Preferred working conditions are 65-110 DEG C., especially 85-95 DEG C., and 1-4 atmospheres. The process may be carried out continuously, an example being given of the production of vinyl chloride from acetylene. Methylacetylene, vinylacetylene, phenylacetylene, dimethylacetylene and hydrogen bromide are also specified as reactants.ALSO:Catalysts for the production of unsaturated halides from acetylenic hydrocarbons and hydrogen halide comprise solutions of the latter in which cuprous halide forms 90 per cent or more of the halide salts present and in which the molecular ratio of cuprous halide to hydrogen halide is about 1:2. The cuprous halide is then present as 42CuCl3, which is formed by mixing the constituents in the correct proportion; when using the constant-boiling aqueous acid the cuprous halide solution has a S.G. of 1.4 at 70 DEG C. |
