titleOfInvention Computer for integrating tristimulus values
abstract 678,273. Comparing colours. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Jan. 21, 1949 [Feb. 5, 1948], No. 1778/49. Class 97 (i). - [Also in Groups XIX and XL (b)] The tristimulus colour values of a specimen are determined, as a radiant-energy distribution curve therefor is produced by a recording spectrophotometer, by means comprising a first integrator, for integrating the energy distribution curve as it is produced, the output of which forms one input of each of three terminal integrators, the other inputs of which are derived from cams representing respectively the functions Ex, Ey, and Ez of the illuminant, where the function E represents the distribution of radiant energy and x, y and z are the tristimulus functions of the equal energy spectrum. The terminal integrators operate counters which, at the end of the operation, register the three tristimulus values. A motor 11 of a known form of recording spectrophotometer rotates a drum 10 carrying a recording surface and a motor 16 controls the position of a pen or stylus 14 axially of the drum in accordance with the radiant energy transmitted or reflected by a specimen as the wavelength of light received by the specimen is varied. These motors 11, 16 are coupled, either directly or by Selsynservomotor combinations 22, 24 and 19, 21, to shafts 25 and 51. The shaft 51 is arranged to move the balls of a ball integrator 49 radially of its disc 48 which is geared to the shaft 25. In this way the curve drawn on the drum 10 is simultaneously integrated. The shaft 25 is also geared to three cams 39-41 representing the functions Ex, Ey and Ez. Followers 73-75 of these cams position the. balls of three further ball integrators 61-63, the discs of which are rotated, by a shaft 57, in accordance with the output of the integrator 49. The outputs of these integrators are coupled respectively to counters 93, 96 and 97 on which the tristimulus values for the specimen, in the illuminant represented by the cams 39-41, are registered at the end of the operation. A calibrated disc 35, geared to the cams 39-41, in co-operation with a pointer, indicates the wavelength at which the cams are positioned and enables them to be set initially. The tristimulus valves of an illuminant may be found by examining the illuminant directly with the spectrophotometer and replacing cams 39-41 by similar cams formed according to the functions x, y and z. The cam followers 73-75 may be held against their respective cams by springs, but preferably each is urged against its cam by a motor 89 controlled by an electronic circuit so that when contact is made or broken, the motor is reversed. The cams may be replaced by drums on which corresponding curves are mounted and followed by a photo-electric curve-follower mechanism (see Group XL (b).
