| abstract | Material containing furfuryl alcohol is polymerized by treating with a suitable acid, particularly sulphuric acid, the control of polymerization being facilitated by the addition of a small quantity of weaker acid salt of a type adapted to produce a buffering action on the mixture of the furfuryl alcohol containing material and acid, preferred salts being magnesium acetate tetrahydrate, sodium acetate trihydrate and anhydrous sodium levulinate. Polymerization may be stopped by the addition of alkali. |
