titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of anthracene, phenanthrene and carbazole
abstract A mixture of anthracene, phenanthrene, and carbazole in solution in a water-immiscible solvent, e.g. benzene or toluene, is treated with an excess of 80-90 per cent sulphuric acid and intensively stirred to give a precipitate of sulphuric acid-containing carbazole sulphate which adheres to the wall and bottom of the reactor, the solution being discharged and anthracene and phenanthrene recovered therefrom while carbazole is obtained by decomposing the precipitate with water, e.g. as described in Specification 676,576. The total amount of acid is preferably added at once at about 20-30 DEG C., and stirring continued for 30 minutes. The solution may be decanted and further amounts of crude anthracene solution treated in the same reactor. The accumulated precipitate is treated in known manner. The solution may be washed to remove acid, anthracene and phenanthrene then being recovered as by crystallization. The initial crude solution may be given a preliminary washing as with 65-75 per cent sulphuric acid. A crude anthracene solution saturated at say 50-60 DEG C. may be used which on cooling to the reaction temperature becomes practically saturated with respect to anthracene. Two reactors may be used alternately provided with agitators, while the solution is circulated by a pump, and sulphuric acid is drawn in by an aspirating device which also draws in air or inert gas to promote mixing. A secondary acid treatment may be effected to remove residual carbazole. Specification 548,877 also is referred to.
