titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the preparation of a product containing an alkali metal acid cyanamide
abstract A defoliant product containing an alkali metal acid cyanamide is prepared by heating a mixture of calcium cyanamide, e.g. lime nitrogen, water, and alkali metal, e.g. sodium or potassium, hydroxide at 90-110 DEG C for at least one hour, the molecular ratio of water to calcium cyanamide being 1-2 : 1 and the molecular ratio of alkali metal hydroxide to calcium cyanamide being at least 1 : 1. A wetting agent may be added, e.g. turkey red oil, alkylated aryl sulphonates, and the product of reacting long chain olefins with nitrosyl chloride and preparing an addition compound with sodium sulphite. The reaction mixture may be continuously advanced through a reaction zone, e.g. a pug mill maintained at 100 DEG C by a steam jacket, with agitation to drive off excess water, and a substantially dry product is recovered after 1 1/2 hours reaction time.
