titleOfInvention Synthetic hydrocarbon lubricants
abstract Synthetic lubricants are obtained by passing normal, alpha-mono-olefines having between six and fourteen carbon atoms per molecule into a reaction zone free of catalytic material, at a temperature from about 700 DEG to 900 DEG F., and in the presence of hydrogen or carbon monoxide, or mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, the partial pressure of the gas or mixture of gases employed being from 50 pounds per square inch to 5000 pounds per square inch. The olefine used may be pure or it may be mixed with other hydrocarbons such as paraffinic hydrocarbons. A mixture of the olefines of varying chain lengths may also be used. Suitable charge stocks include the liquid olefines obtained by cracking of paraffin wax, slack wax, gas oils, foots oils, or heavy petroleum residua. Specified olefines are 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene and 1-tetradecene. The hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide may comprise hydrogen-rich refinery gases, synthesis gases and gases obtained by the oxygen-deficient combustion of fuel oil or coal. It is preferred to use mixtures of the two gases, the volume ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide being preferably between 10 : 1 and 1 : 1. The synthetic lubricant may be recovered from the liquid effluent from the reaction zone by distilling off both the unreacted olefinic material, which can then be recycled to the process, and the intermediate boiling polymer which is also formed. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously and is preferably effected in a sealed, rocking-type stainless steel bomb. In a typical example, 1-decene is charged into a bomb and the system flushed with hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide to displace the air. Pure hydrogen or carbon monoxide or mixtures of the two is then introduced so that the gas or gas mixture gives a pressure of 1000 pounds per square inch. The reactants are then heated rapidly to 750 DEG F. with rocking of the bomb for three hours. The unreacted olefine and intermediate boiling material are then distilled off to leave the residual lubricating oil. The results obtained under various conditions of treatment of 1-decene are tabulated together with the results obtained in comparative examples, using air and nitrogen respectively instead of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and the properties of the resulting lubricant are given in each case. Specification 657,307 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that alpha-mono-olefines which contain one or more side chains which are very short relative to the main chain length may also be used as starting materials. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
