titleOfInvention | Improvements in the production of nitrogen-containing polymers |
abstract | Linear polymers resistant to acid hydrolysis and containing the 1,2,4-triazole nucleus repeated along the polymer chain are made by heating a dicarboxylic acid and two moles of hydrazine for each mole of acid in the presence of water and/or in a pressure vessel under conditions such that the liquid reagents occupy more than 60 per cent of the volume of the vessel. The need for excess hydrazine, as described in the parent Specification, is thereby avoided. Instead of the acid and hydrazine, a reagent or reagents yielding these materials on hydrolysis may be used. Heating is preferably continued until the polymer is fibre forming. Polymerization may be continued by heating until the reactants resinify and the product hydrolysed as described in Specification 626,525 to restore the linear character of the polymer. In examples: (1) 50 parts of sebacic dihydrazide and 24 parts water were heated at 220 DEG C. for 2 hours to give a polymer melting at 220 DEG C. and soluble on prolonged boiling in methanol; (2) similar to (1) using less water and giving a fibre-forming polymer melting at 192-195 DEG C., soluble in methanol; (3) sebacic acid and two mole equivalents of hydrazine as a 55 per cent aqueous solution were heated at 220 DEG C. and later 260 DEG C. to give a fibre forming polymer melting at 175-180 DEG C., and soluble in hot methanol, and in cresol and formic acid; (4) sebacic dihydrazide was changed into an autoclave so as to fill 83 per cent of the available space, and heated at 220 DEG C. to give a polymer similar to that of example (1). For comparison an example is given in which sebacic dihydrazide filling less than 50 per cent of an autoclave was heated to give a polymer melting at 190-195 DEG C. and broken down by boiling hydrochloric acid. Specifications 606,701, [Group V], and 613,020 also are referred to. |
