abstract | 674,647. Nitrate-containing dynamites. AKTIEBOLAGET EXPRESS-DYNAMIT. Jan. 18, 1950. [Jan. 20, 1949] No. 1376/50. Class 9 (ii). A plastic or semi-plastic dynamite comprises at least one liquid nitrogenous organic substance containing nitrogen-bound oxygen, e.g. nitroglycerin, nitroglycol, and nitrohydrocarbons such as nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene and liquid trinitrotoluene, at least one solid nitrogenous organic substance containing nitrogenbound oxygen, e.g. nitrocellulose, and a metal or ammonium nitrate 10-70 per cent of which consists of "sharp-edged" grains and 90-30 per cent of "rounded-off" grains, the proportions of the nitrogenous substances being such as to render the explosive coherent. The proportions quoted are : nitroglycerin 0-32 per cent; nitroglycol 4-40 per cent ; nitrohydrocarbons 0-10 per cent; the total of liquid nitrogenous substance being preferably at least 11 per cent; nitrocelluoose 0.5-4 per cent; water therein 0-1 per cent ; ammonium or metal nitrate 45-75 per cent ; aluminium, magnesium, zinc or iron powder, or an alloy of two or more of these 0-12 per cent, preferably 8-12 per cent; wood flour 0-1 per cent; colouring matter, e.g. ferric oxide, 0-0.3 per cent; chalk 0-0.3 per cent. The "sharpedged" grains of ammoninum nitrate may be obtained by crystallisation under certain conditions or by grinding commercial ammonium nitrate, consisting almost completely of "rounded-off" grains, in an edge runner mill or disintegrator to the required extent. The ammonium nitrate should all pass 50 mesh and 5-70 per cent 220 mesh, and the aluminium, which may be spray granulated, may be of the same size or, preferably, coarser, say 30 mesh. |
