titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of luminescent materials
abstract 672,883. Luminescent materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 3, 1949 [Nov. 17, 1948], No. 29925/48. Addition to 658,748. Class 39 (i). Zinc sulphide is heated in an inert atmosphere with phosphorus or with a compound of phosphorus other than phosphates, the phosphorus content not exceeding 10 per cent by weight of the sulphide. The atmosphere may be sulphur vapour or static or flowing nitrogen; the rate of flow of the nitrogen may be 5 litres per hour. The sulphide may be heated to 900-1100‹ C., preferably 950‹ C. in phosphorus vapour or with red phosphorus, zinc phosphide or phosphorus pentasulphide. A flux consisting of the chloride of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, in particular magnesium or sodium chloride, may be used. Specific proportions and heating times are given in the examples. The compound may be excited to give blue or yellow light by one or more of ultra-violet rays, e.g. ultra-violet light of 3650A, X-rays, cathode rays or a glow discharge.
