titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the hardening of threads or filaments and apparatus therefor
abstract A plurality of threads of filaments of <PICT:0672669/IV (a)/1> hardenable material is hardened by flowing a through a relatively narrow space between substantially flat confining surfaces at such a speed that the liquid flows through the space with viscous flow in the form of a substantially flat sheet, discharging a plurality of continuous liquid streams of hardenable material into the centre of the sheet, whereby the sheet supports and surrounds the hardenable material, causing the thread to harden while supported in the stream of hardenable material. In an example, rubber latex is fed through a row of spaced nozzles 41 into the centre of the mouth 17 of a flat tube confined by plates 12 and 13 through which passes glycerine at 210 DEG F. Conditions are so arranged that the latex and glycerine pass along together with substantially no relative motion, and the hardened thread 44 leaves the tube and passes on to conveyer 45. The glycerine is drawn from reservoir 5 where it is heated by coil 6, via pipe 8 to passages 10 and 11. A constant head is maintained by the use of drain outlets 32 and 33 and return pipe 34. The glycerine may be replaced by a hardening bath containing magnesium sulphate, zinc ammonium sulphate, acetic acid or formic acid, and the hardenable material may be a resin, plastic or metal.
