titleOfInvention A process for the manufacture of olefin halides
abstract Olefine chlorides or bromides are made from a mixture of an olefinic compound with another gas such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide or paraffin which would react with chlorine or bromine under the conditions of direct halosubstitution by treating the mixture with chlorine or bromine in a primary zone of a reactor at a temperature which is low enough to exclude a reaction between the halogen and the gases other than the olefine, but high enough to effect substantial additive halogenation of the olefine, and then passing the product through a second reaction zone at a higher temperature, at which halogen hydride is split off to form the desired olefine chloride or bromide. No separation, concentration or purification takes place between the two reaction zones. The temperature in the first reaction zone is between - 20 DEG and 200 DEG C. and in the second reaction zone between 400 DEG and 700 DEG C. Olefines mentioned include ethylene, propene, butene-1, butene-2, isobutene and a mixture of the isomeric butenes. If desired, catalysts may be present in either zone but normally no catalyst will be present in the first zone. Products obtained include vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide s- and as-dichloro ethylene, alkyl chloride, mono- and di-chloropropene and monochlorohexene. Examples are given. Specification 603,809 is referred to.
