titleOfInvention Improvements in hydrocarbon lubricating oil compositions
abstract The zinc or cadmium salt of an acidic reaction product obtained by reacting a phosphorus sulphide or selenide, other than phosphorus pentasulphide, with a cycloaliphatic alcohol is employed as an ingredient in a lubricating composition (see Group III). Cycloaliphatic alcohols mentioned include methyl cyclohexanol, ethyl cyclohexanol, propyl cyclohexanol, butyl cyclohexanol, amyl cyclohexanol, dimethyl cyclohexanol, decahydronaphthols, dodecahydro-phenyl phenols, phenyl cyclohexanol, benzyl cyclohexanol, tolyl cyclohexanol, benzoyl cyclohexanol, terpineol, menthol and sterols. Mixtures of cycloaliphatic alcohols may be employed such as (a) a mixture of alkylated cyclohexanols consisting principally of ethyl and propyl cyclohexanols obtained by hydrogenation of commercial cresol. The cycloaliphatic alcohols may contain substituent groups, particularly alkyl, alkoxy or acyl groups. The zinc salt may be produced by (i) reacting together the cycloaliphatic alcohol, the phosphorus sulphide or selenide and a basic zinc compound such as zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or basic zinc carbonate, or (ii) reacting together the cycloaliphatic alcohol and the phosphorus sulphide or selenide to form an acid ester either directly or by subsequent hydrolysis of the reaction product and converting the ester to its zinc salt either directly by reaction with a basic zinc compound or indirectly by first forming an alkali metal salt and then reacting the latter by double decomposition with a water-soluble zinc salt. Similarly the cadmium salt may be produced by employing cadmium oxide as the basic cadmium compound in either of methods (i) and (ii). Details are given of the preparation of the zinc and cadmium salts of P2S3-treated or P2Se5-treated methyl cyclohexanol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers to the use in a lubricating composition of a stable oil-soluble compound which contains: (a) an organic radicle derived from a cyclic alcohol; (b) an element of the class consisting of zinc and cadmium; (c) an element of the class consisting of phosphorus and arsenic, and (d) an element of the class consisting of sulphide and selenium. Preferred stable oil-soluble compounds are zinc salts of acidic reaction products obtained by reacting a phosphorus sulphide or selenide (including phosphorus pentasulphide) with a cyclic alcohol. Lists of cyclic alcohols and of substituent groups which may be present in the cyclic alcohol molecules are given. The various zinc salts of P2S5-treated cycloaliphatic alcohols mentioned in U.S.A. Specification 2,261,047 are referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:A lubricating composition, especially suitable for use in the crankcases of internal combustion engines, comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of the zinc or cadmium salt of an acidic reaction product obtained by reacting a phosphorus sulphide or selenide, other than phosphorus pentasulphide, with a cycloaliphatic alcohol. Cycloaliphatic alcohols mentioned include methyl cyclohexanol, ethyl cyclohexanol, propyl cyclohexanol, butyl cyclohexanol amyl cyclohexanol, dimethyl cyclohexanol, decahydronaphthols, dodecahydro - phenyl - phenols, phenyl cyclohexanol, benzyl cyclohexanol, tolyl cyclohexanol, benzoyl cyclohexanol, terpineol, menthol and sterols. Mixtures of cycloaliphatic alcohols may be employed such as (a) a mixture of alkylated cyclohexanols consisting principally of ethyl and propyl cyclohexanols or (b) the mixture of methyl cyclohexanols obtained by hydrogenation of commercial cresol. The cycloaliphatic alcohols may contain substituent groups, particularly alkyl, alkoxy or acyl groups. The zinc salt may be produced by (i) reacting together the cycloaliphatic alcohol, the phosphorus sulphide or selenide and a basic zinc compound such as zinc oxide, zinc carbonate or basic zinc carbonate or (ii) reacting together the cycloaliphatic alcohol and the phosphorus sulphide or selenide to form an acid ester either directly or by subsequent hydrolysis of the reaction product and converting the ester to its zinc salt either directly by reaction with a basic zinc compound or indirectly by first forming an alkali metal salt and then reacting the latter by double decomposition with a water-soluble zinc salt. Similarly the cadmium salt may be produced by employing cadmium oxide as the basic cadmium compound in either of methods (i) and (ii). The lubricating composition may contain additional ingredients, for example detergents, and particularly metal-containing organic compounds. A list of detergents of the metal-containing organic compound type is given. In examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing (1) the zinc or cadmium salt of P2S3-treated methyl cyclohexanol, (2) the zinc or cadmium salt of P2Se5-treated methyl cyclohexanol, (3) the zinc salt of P2S3-treated 4-methyl cyclohexanol and calcium p-cetyl phenate with or without calcium cetyl phosphate, (4) the zinc salt of P4S3-treated 2-ethyl cyclohexanol with aluminium n-butoxide and calcium cetyl phosphate or with calcium mahogany sulphonates, (5) the zinc salt of P4S7-treated 4-tert.-amyl cyclohexanol with calcium mahogany sulphonates and the calcium salt of p-tert.-amyl phenol disulphide or with the magnesium phenate of lauryl salicylate, (6) the zinc salt of P2Se5-treated 4-methyl cyclohexanol with calcium mahogany sulphonates and the calcium salt of formaldehyde-p-tert.-amyl phenol condensation product or with calcium 10-phenyl stearate, (7) the zinc salt of P2Se3-treated 4-iso-propyl cyclohexanol with calcium mahogany sulphonates and aluminium n-butoxide or with cobalt 10-(p-chlorphenyl) stearate and (8) the zinc salt of P4S5-treated 2-n-butyl cyclohexanol with the calcium soaps of acids from the oxidation of a mineral oil fraction and the calcium salt of p-tert.-amyl phenol disulphide. Specification 665,107 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a lubricating composition comprising a major proportion of a hydrocarbon oil and a minor proportion of a stable oil-soluble compound which contains:-(a) an organic radicle derived from a cyclic alcohol; (b) an element of the class consisting of zinc and cadmium; (c) an element of the class consisting of phosphorsu and arsenic; and (d) an element of the class consisting of sulphur and selenium. The various zinc salts of P2S5-treated cycloaliphate alcohols mentioned in U.S.A. Specification 2,261,047, are referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
