titleOfInvention Process for the production of i.io-phenanthroline
abstract 1 : 10-Phenanthroline is prepared by a process of treatment of o-phenylene diamine or 8-aminoquinoline with glycerol in presence of sulphuric acid and a dehydrogenating agent, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of cupric salts and the 1 : 10-phenanthroline is isolated in the form of its copper complex which is then decomposed to give the free base. Preferred conditions are a temperature of 120-140 DEG C., and the use of as a dehydrogenating agent of nitrobenzene sulphonic acid or arsenic acid. Three examples of the process are given.
