titleOfInvention | Improvements in interpolymers |
abstract | Copolymers of (1) a 2-alkenyl 2-alkenoate, (2) a 2-alkenyl compound of the formula RCH=CR-CH2-X, where one R is hydrogen and the other R is selected from hydrogen, chlorine, methyl, ethyl, chloromethyl and phenyl and X is selected from chlorine, alkoxy, aralkoxy and acyloxy, and, optionally (3) a copolymerizable mono-olefinic compound are made by heating a mixture comprising 1 molar equivalent of (1), 0.2 to 12 molar equivalents of (2), and, optionally, not more than 6 molar equivalents of (3), in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and halting the reaction before or at the point of incipient gelation. The 2-alkenyl 2-alkenoate may be allyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate, methallyl acrylate, allyl chloroacrylate allyl crotonate, cinnamyl acrylate, allyl cinnamate and chlorallyl chloroacrylate. Specified 2-alkenyl compounds are allyl chloride, methallyl chloride, crotyl chloride, 2,3 - dichloropropene, 1,4 - dichlorobutene - 2,2 - chlorallyl chloride, 2 - (chloro - methyl) - allyl chloride, cinnamyl chloride, allyl methyl ether, methallyl ethyl ether, beta-allyloxyethanol, allyl propyl ether, ethallyl phenyl ether, methallyl butyl ether, methallyl amyl ether, methallyl heptyl ether, allyl octyl ether, crotyl ethyl ether, 2-chloroallyl ethyl ether, methallyl phenyl ether, allyl benzyl ether, allyl acetate, 2-chlor-allyl propionate, methallyl butyrate, ethallyl valerate and cinnamyl acetate. Mono-olefinic compounds mentioned are isobutylene, styrene, p-chlorostyrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloracetate, vinyl trichloracetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, methyl vinyl ketone, methyl acrylate, n-butyl methacrylate, octyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, tolyl acrylate, benzyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, beta-chloroethyl acrylate, ethyl alpha-chloroacrylate, acrylamide, N-methylacrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, fumaronitrile, diethyl fumarate, bis - (betachloroethyl) fumarate, dibutyl fumarate, bis-(2-ethyl hexyl) fumarate, dimethyl, diethyl, dihexyl, dicyclohexyl itaconate and the corresponding esters of mesaconic, citraconic and aconitic acids, dibutyl maleate, maleimide, N-butylmaleimide, n-butyl vinyl ether, hexyl vinyl ether, phenyl vinyl ether, and benzyl vinyl ether. The interpolymers alone or dissolved in a suitable solvent, e.g. acetone or cyclohexanone, or in another monomer, e.g. allyl acrylate, styrene, diethyl fumarate, vinyl butyrate and diallyl fumarate and mixed if desired with dyes, pigments, fillers, plasticizers and polymerization catalysts may be used in moulding, coating, laminating and impregnating operations and the interpolymer rendered hard and infusible by heat. Specification 599,145 is referred to. |
