titleOfInvention Methods of preparing alkyl acyloxy acrylates and derivatives thereof
abstract Alkyl b -acyloxyacrylates are prepared by reacting metallo derivatives of alkyl b -hydroxyacrylates with a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid halide in dialkyl ether solution, and directly neutralizing the reaction mixture to about pH7. Preferably, sodio-derivatives are used in ether at ca. 35 DEG C.; the acid may be e.g. butyryl chloride or propionyl bromide. The neutralization may be performed with e.g. an aqueous solution of a bicarbonate. The metallo derivatives of the b -hydroxyacrylates may be prepared by reacting an alkyl, e.g. ethyl, acetate with an alkyl, e.g. ethyl, formate and an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, in ether. The alkyl b -acyloxyacrylates may be treated with halogen, e.g. chlorine or bromine, in an alkanol R2OH, to give an alkyl a -halo-b : b -dialkoxypropionate of formula <FORM:0666312/IV (b)/1> In the example, ethyl formate, ethyl acetate, and sodium sand in xylene are heated to give the sodio derivative of ethyl b -hydroxyacrylate, which is treated with acetyl chloride to give ethyl b -acetoxyacrylate, further treatment of which with chlorine in ethanol gives ethyl a -chloro-b : b -diethoxypropionate. p Specification 531,968 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the statement that the alkyl a -halo-b : b -dialkoxypropionates may be hydrolysed to the free acid, treated with ammonia to give a -amino-b : b -dialkoxypropionic acid, which is treated with a phenacyl halide to give a -phenacetamido-b : b -dialkoxypropionic acid, which may then be esterified. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
