titleOfInvention Improvements in aircraft components having anti-icing means and method for applying such anti-icing means
abstract A cast monohydroxyphenol-aldehyde resin or a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin admixed with natural or synthetic rubber latex or a non-conjugated double-bonded compound containing the group CH2=C< is applied to a semi-conductive layer in contact with spaced electrodes on an aircraft component and hardened at below 100 DEG C. to produce an anti-icing coating. The monohydroxyphenol resins are obtained by condensing one mole. of a monohydroxyphenol with 2 to 2.5 moles. of formaldehyde, using an alkaline catalyst, applying the composition to the semi-conducting layer as a solution or dispersion also containing an acid catalyst, e.g. lactic acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid and condensing. Plasticizers such as glycerol or triacetin may also be present. Particularly suitable resorcinol formaldehyde compositions are aqueous alkaline solutions of a partial condensation product of resorcinolformaldehyde mixed with rubber latex in the proportions of 1.5 to 5 parts of rubber per part resin. Suitable compounds containing the group CH2=C< are polystyrene, polymethyl and polyethyl acrylates, polymethyl, ethyl or propyl methacrylates and polyallyl methacrylate. They may be used as monomers or as partially polymerized syrups containing a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, biacetyl or benzophenone; ultraviolet light may also be used. Further suitable resins are contact resins such as polyester-polyvinyl resins in which the polyvinyl compound is, e.g., polystyrene or polydiallyl phthalate.ALSO:Anti-icing means are formed on an air-craft component by forming thereon a semi-conductive layer in contact with spaced electrodes, covering the layer with a film of a liquid composition comprising (1) a cast monohydroxy-phenol-aldehyde resin or (2) a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin mixed with natural or synthetic rubber latex or (3) a non-conjugated double-bonded compound containing the group CH2=C<-, and hardening the film at below 100 DEG C. The semi-conductive layer may comprise a dispersion of acetylene black in a solution of rubber, silicone resin, or a polyvinyl formal in a volatile solvent.
