abstract | The invention comprises substituted 2-thio5 - keto - tetrahydrothiazoles of the general formula <FORM:0662776/IV (b)/1> in which R is an alkyl, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or stearyl group, a cyclohexyl group, or an aralkyl, e.g. benzyl or naphthylmethyl group. They may be prepared by reacting an alkyl, cyclohexyl or aralkyl aminoacetamide with carbon disulphide, preferably at room temperature and in an aqueous medium in the presence of mild alkali. Examples are given in which the 3-methyl-, 3-ethyl-, 3-cyclohexyl-, 3-stearyl-, 3-benzyl-, and 3-butyl-2-thio-5-keto-tetrahydrothiazoles are prepared in the presence of aqueous potassium carbonate.
