titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to processes for making shaped carbon bodies and the shaped carbon bodies resulting from said processes
abstract Shaped carbon bodies, e.g., electrodes, arc lamp carbons, brushes, bricks, blocks, tubes, bearing rings and plates, are made by mixing raw uncalcined coke, obtained by carbonizing liquefiable hydrocarbons and having a volatile content exclusive of water of 8-20 per cent, with a plasticizer which is substantially convertible to carbon on baking and is not thermally decomposable or substantially vapourizable below 500 DEG F. heating the mixture to 100 DEG -400 DEG F. to form a uniform plastic mass, forming the mass into shape by pressure, and baking with gradual heating to 1000 DEG -2000 DEG F. to carbonize the decomposable matter and reduce the volatile content, suitable coke is obtained by thermal cracking or coking of petroleum hydrocarbon oils, cracked asphalts, straight run asphalts, coal tar pitch, or wood tar pitch. Plasticizers are cycloparaffins, coal tar oils and pitches, anthracene oil, lignite, tar oils and pitches, wood tar oils and pitches, asphalt, phenanthrene, diphenyl, anthracene, or chloro-, hydroxy-, methoxy-, amino-, or nitro-substituted compounds such as nitrobenzene, m-dinitrobenzene, o-nitrophenol, o-cyclohexylphenol, o-nitroanisol, o-nitroaniline, o- and m-nitrochlorobenzene, 2 : 4 dinitrochlorobenzene, mono-and di-nitrotoluene, mono- and di-nitroxylenes, o-nitrodiphenyl, or a -nitronaphthalene, or mixtures of these; 10-40 per cent by weight is usual and the aromatic plasticizers are preferred. Raw petroleum coke say 4-20 mesh is mixed with the plasticizer under non-oxidising conditions in the cold, or at 100 DEG -200 DEG F. if necessary, and the mixture heated to 300 DEG F. for 30 minutes with continued mixing before being extruded, moulded, or cast. The shaped bodies are baked by heating at a temperature increasing by 5 DEG F. per hour to 1740 DEG F. for 12-20 days and may be subsequently graphitized at 4000-5070 DEG F.
