abstract Alkoxyalkyl iodobenzoates of the formula <FORM:0661185/IV (b)/1> where Y is alkylene, R is alkyl and the total number of carbon atoms in the molecule is 10-18, or of the formula <FORM:0661185/IV (b)/2> where Y is alkylene, R and R1 are alkyl and the total number of carbon atoms in the molecule is 11-16, are prepared from (1) the iodobenzoic acid or iodoalkoxybenzoic acid and an alkoxyalkanol in the presence of an acid catalyst; (2) as in (1) using a reactive derivative of the acid, e.g. chloride or anhydride, in which case no catalyst is necessary; (3) a metallic (e.g. alkali metal) salt of the iodobenzoic or iodo-alkoxy-benzoic acid and an alkoxyalkyl halide. Preferably Y has 2-3 carbon atoms, R has 1-6 and R1 has 1-2. In the examples, the following compounds are prepared: 2-ethoxyethyl o-iodobenzoate; 2-methoxyethyl and 2-ethoxyethyl m-iodobenzoates; 2-methoxyethyl, 2-ethoxyethyl, 3-methoxypropyl, 3-ethoxypropyl, 2-butoxyethyl and 2 - (21 - ethyl - butoxy) - ethyl p - iodobenzoates; 2-ethoxyethyl, 2-butoxyethyl and 5-methoxypropyl 3-iodo-4-methoxy-benzoates, 2-methoxyethyl, 2-ethoxyethyl and 3-ethoxypropyl 3 - iodo - 4 - ethoxy - benzoates; 2-ethoxyethyl 2 - iodo - 5 - methoxy - benzoate. Mixtures of two of these esters form eutectic mixtures with low melting points.
